How Fox News Ruined My Friend

I have known H. for at least twenty years. The more I got to know him the more I liked him. He totally fixed my laptop, after Mark had wrecked it. I believe Mark had cause a virus to enter my Dell, and it was so slow. H. fixed it in one afternoon. H. said he didn’t see evidence of a virus. Mark and I separated ways, but I continued to see H. at least 3 to 4 times a week.

Almost every time I first saw H., he would begin a discussion favoring Bush’s war on Iraq. One of his defenses was “Hillary voted for it.” At that time I was very uninterested in politics, so I usually wouldn’t respond in any deep conversation. I had other issues in my life.

When the clown show in the form of Double Downer came on the scene, I began to perk up to current events. In my mind I was flabbergasted that so many people would believe the pathological lying.

Before trying to have in-depth conversations, one of the issues I zeroed in on with H. was his weird theories on abortion. His stance against abortion seemed to be two-fold: first that Margaret Sanger was racist, and that is why she pushed abortion. And second that abortion on demand was bad for the white race, because too many white women would get abortions.

Well, coincidentally, my master’s thesis was about abortion and public policy. I began to try to understand H.’s rationale. It seemed like he wanted to have his cake and eat it. I knew H. was only getting his info from Fox.

I also knew that Fox loved to weaponize its lies. So I started to try to break down this rationale by asking questions. It was difficult because H. would get very defensive. I would make a statement of fact and he would tell me it’s not true. For instance, I told him that in the first half of the twentieth century that there were more children per black couple than white couple. He argued that for half a day. Then I invoked folklore: “The rich get richer and the poor have children.” That settled my point.
